New research suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
