European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
